 Microsoft Corp. said it eliminated 1,400 <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Job layoffs" ttm="jobs"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> Thursday and will slash up to 5,000 <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Job layoffs" ttm="jobs"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> in six departments over the next 18 months.

The news follows the Redmond, Wash.-based <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Computer software" ttm="software"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> giant�s 11 pecent decline in second-quarter <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Net income" ttm="net income"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms>. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) reported $4.2 billion in <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Net income" ttm="net income"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> for the quarter.

Microsoft has 1,865 employees in <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Texas" ttm="Texas"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> and 180 of those are in Houston, according to a <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Business revenue" ttm="compan"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms>y spokeswoman.

�Today�s actions are the result of our need to improve efficiency and rebalance resources against our priorities, but it is not a decision we take lightly,� the spokeswoman said in an e-mail statement. �We expect that the global <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Economy" ttm="economic"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> environment will continue to be challenging and we will continue to evaluate our <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Business revenue" ttm="business"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> to ensure that our <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Investments" ttm="investments"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> are aligned to current and <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Futures (Investments)" ttm="future"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> <MAIstroTerms><MAIstroTerm Name="Business revenue" ttm="revenue"></MAIstroTerm></MAIstroTerms> opportunities.
